Correlations 2024: Panel

As part of the Correlations Forum, we hosted the panel Generative AI and Photography: Onto-Historical (Dis)Correlations with Anja Engelke, Roland Meyer, Diego Nóbrega, Olga Moskatova, and moderator Lukas R.A. Wilde. The discussion explored the complex relationship between so-called “generative artificial intelligence” and photography—as both a technological medium and an art form. While photography has long been perceived as a mechanical reproduction of reality and a medium of memory, AI-generated images mark a significant shift: away from the capture of physical presence and toward the visualization of semantic concepts and statistical patterns.

Drawing on experimental approaches, artistic works, and examples from popular culture, the panelists investigated how generative AI challenges the ontology and historical perception of photography. They addressed the continuities and discontinuities between AI images and digital photographs and reflected on what it means to create “photographic” images in the age of generative models.

The panel took place on Thursday, 12 December 2024, at 10:00 AM in the Aula at the University of Arts and Design Offenbach. It was co-organized by the international research network AI and Visual Media.
